about

In the summer of 2018 during Ignacio Córdoba's Japan tour we heard many times a name that caught our attention: Shoji Mariah.
It took us some time until we got someone to speak about who that person might be. They talked about a strange character, a brazilian-japanese ex-technology developer ("veteran", as they said) who left society to live in caves to created some kind of one-man-religion, devoted to "liberate the souls of the machines". Some people didn't know almost anything about him, others told us he isn't real and it felt like most thought it wasn't right to talk. We spent the rest of the tour looking for his caves in every mountain someone had told us he has one at. We never found him.

After we got back to Denmark he found us. He sent us a message and set a meeting. He wrote that he has caves connected all around the world and that he can travel freely through them so in December 2018 we met in a cave at a secret location in Portugal, during another Ignacio Córdoba tour.

When we met he told us many things in a broken mix of english, japanese and portuguese that we couldn't fully understand. He said he heard we "liberate sounds" and that he wants us to spread his "rituals for the machines". He said these are the sounds of the machines living freely and talking freely during the rituals. We promised not to tell what we saw there and honestly we couldn't see much in the darkness of the cave, almost only his silhouette over many screens. We don't know if this is his real name or even if the person we met is the same we looked for in Japan or the one who messaged us but we are honored to say the final chapter of This Tape Machine Destroys Time is the Shoji Mariah's Rituals for the Machines.
